ACCMA Launches 2019 Physician Leadership Program

Registration is now open for the 2019 Physician Leadership Program, an innovative program developed in 2016 by physician leaders in collaboration with faculty from the UC Berkeley School of Public Health and Haas School of Business. The course addresses the fact that physicians are, and should be, placed in roles with organizational responsibility, but have limited formal opportunities to learn the concepts, skills, and tools of leadership. It meets the educational need for a structured course that builds upon physicians’ clinical knowledge and experience and is scheduled to accommodate busy physicians.

This is the third year that the ACCMA is offering the program, and this year we are bringing the program in-house with the same expert faculty: a kick-off full-day Saturday session on October 19, 2019, and five Tuesday evening sessions from October 29, 2019, through January 21, 2020. All sessions will take place at the ACCMA offices in Oakland. Session topics include strategies and opportunities for physicians to lead; the role and power of values and mission; handling conflict and negotiations; how to communicate effectively through stories; leveraging your current project management skills; and how to manage teams within and across departments.

ACCMA members receive a $600 discount on registration, dropping the total price for all six sessions to $2,100. An additional discount of $100 is available to everyone who registers before September 15, 2019. Participants will earn 19.5 hours of CME credit.

Part 2 of the Physician Leadership Program will be offered in Spring 2020 as a deeper dive into the principles and practice of physician leadership. It will build on Part 1, and completion of that program or a similar introductory leadership course is a prerequisite.
