HHS Pushes ICD-10 Deadline to 2013
Responding to pressure from organized medicine, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) agreed to put off for two additional years until Oct. 1, 2013 the implementation of the ICD-10 diagnostic code set. Despite this two year deal, CMA and CMA will continue to push for an 8-year transition plan to ensure adequate time for a smooth transition. The ICD-9 contains 17,000 codes while the ICD-10 set contains more than 155,000 codes.
