Medical Board Changes CME Reporting Requirements
Effective January 1, physicians are now required to complete 50 CME hours during every two-year licensure period. Previously, physicians were required to complete 100 hours every four years. CME will also be calculated based on the physicianâs personal license renewal date (the last day of the month of your birthday), not the calendar year. The new CME reporting requirements were recently passed by the Medical Board of California (MBC).
CMAâs Institute for Medical Qualityâs CME Certification Program, which documents and verifies physician participation in approved postgraduate education and other CME activities, has been modified to adapt to the medical boardâs new reporting requirements. Physicians in the certification program periodically self-report their CME activities to IMQ, which in turn verifies the physicianâs compliance with medical board requirements. IMQ mails certification acknowledgements to physicians within 4 weeks of receipt. Physicians also can request that their CME certification information be sent to hospitals, health plans, specialty societies, and others for credentialing or membership renewal purposes, without additional charge.
In addition to satisfying the medical boardâs licensure requirements, IMQâs CME certification when completed annually also satisfies eligibility requirements for IMQâs Certificate in Continuing Medical Education and AMAâs Physician Recognition Award.
IMQâs CME certification is $29 for members, $49 for nonmembers. For more information, visit the Institute for Medical Quality's website by clicking here.
