The newly formed political committee, “Patients and Providers to Protect Access and Contain Health Costs,” has hired respected political veteran Jim DeBoo as campaign manager. The committee has been formed to educate California voters about the critical importance of protecting the Medical Injury Compensation Reform Act (MICRA) and preserving access to care in California.

DeBoo is a longtime political strategist, legislative staffer and a campaign veteran. As campaign manager, he will lead the fight against the trial lawyers and their efforts to alter MICRA. DeBoo recently served as director of the California Assembly Speaker’s Office of Member Services (SOMS), in which he was responsible for overall strategy, outreach, coordination and implementation of caucus priorities through multi-media, direct mail and social networking. DeBoo previously served as the chief legislative representative for former mayor of Los Angeles, Antonio Villaraigosa, and also served as a chief of staff for two former Assemblymembers and special advisor to former State Superintendent of Public Instruction and State Senator Jack O’Connell.

The trial lawyers are attempting to qualify an initiative for the 2014 ballot that would substantially increase costs for physicians, patients and state and local governments by allowing for more costly lawsuits and lawyer payouts against the health care system. If the trial lawyers’ ballot measure gets enough signatures to qualify as an initiative, it would appear on the November 2014 ballot.
