Starting January 1st, 2013, Medicare will begin tracking physician participation in the Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS) for purposes of imposing penalties starting in 2015. Physicians who elect not to participate, or who do not meet the reporting requirement during the 2013 reporting period, will receive a 1.5 percent payment penalty starting in 2015. Physicians may choose to report quality measures to CMS through (1) their Medicare Part B claims, (2) a qualified registry, or (3) a qualified electronic health record (EHR) system. Physicians are encouraged to begin participating in PQRS as soon as possible to familiarize themselves with the reporting process and increase the probability that they meet the reporting requirements in 2013. To help physicians get started with PQRS reporting, the ACCMA has developed comprehensive written guidance and recently hosted a free webinar, which can both be accessed online at www.accma.org  or by calling 510-654-5383.
