The NPI is a 10-digit standard unique health identifier number for physicians and other health care professionals adopted under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Health plans, including Medicare, Medicaid, private health insurers, and all clearinghouses, must accept and use NPIs in HIPAA standard transactions.
