Physician groups, including the California Medical Association (CMA), have called on Anthem to rescind their new policy that deems Monitored Anesthesia Care (MAC) “not medically necessary” during “routine” cataract surgery. Anthem seems to have relied on selected extracts from the Anesthesia section of an American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Preferred Practice Pattern on the issue. An Anthem amendment to the policy on February 1 did not address the physicians’ concerns.
