The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has launched new tools to help health care providers understand what information they can share with patients and their families under HIPAA guidelines. A new HIPAA webpage contains new guidance on sharing information related to mental health and substance use disorder treatment with anyone involved in the patient’s care or payment for care. Another new HIPAA webpage provides updated guidance on what protected health information may be used or disclosed for research purposes, as required under the 21st Century Cures Act.
