On October 13, Governor Brown signed SB 189 into law, a bill sponsored by the California Medical Association (CMA) to exempt owners of medical corporations from workers’ compensation coverage, regardless of percentage ownership. This law fixes the unintended consequences of AB 2883, which mandated a 15 percent ownership to exempt owners/employees from workers’ compensation coverage, costing impacted practices up to $1,800 per person in increased workers’ compensation premiums. The new law will take effect on July 1, 2018. To learn more, go to http://www.cmanet.org/news/detail/?article=governor-signs-cma-bill-that-will-save.
