Starting June 21, 2017, physicians are required to use the revised Advance Beneficiary Notice of Noncoverage (ABN), Form CMS-R-131, to notify patients with Medicare fee-for-service that Medicare is not likely to provide coverage in a specific case. The revised form differs only in the March 2020 expiration date on the form. Any new ABN submitted on the old form (03/11) on or after June 21 will be considered invalid, and if Medicare denies the claim, the physician will not be able to collect from the patient. For more information, go to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) webpage at, or contact the ACCMA at 510-654-5383 for assistance.
