The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is accepting hardship exceptions from its Meaningful Use requirement for the 2016 reporting year. Physicians have until July 1, 2017 to apply for the one-year exception and avoid a negative payment adjustment in 2018. The exception is open to physicians who can provide proof that demonstrating meaningful use would result in a significant hardship or to those who have not previously attested to meaningful use and are using the new Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) in 2017 (the deadline for the latter case is October 1, 2017).
