The California trial lawyers’ anti-MICRA initiative will appear on the November 2014 general election ballot as Prop 46. The true intent of Prop 46 is to eliminate the Medical Injury Compensation Reform Act (MICRA), which will increase the overall number and cost of medical lawsuits.  If passed, the initiative will raise the health care costs of California’s state and local governments by “hundreds of millions of dollars,” severely reduce or eliminate valuable medical services offered by community clinics, and force thousands of physicians to leave California in order to find affordable malpractice coverage elsewhere.

The California Medical Association (CMA) is leading an unprecedented coalition of over 1200 organizations to defend MICRA that includes doctors, hospitals, community clinics, Planned Parenthood, organized labor, Chamber of Commerce and other. Alameda-Contra Costa Medical Association (ACCMA) is providing vital grassroots support for the campaign locally through a range of activities to build support for MICRA.

The “No on 46” campaign is officially in full swing, with a websiteTwitter feed and Facebook page aimed at helping to defeat the measure. Meanwhile, the coalition against the measure continues to grow, with labor and civil rights groups joining the efforts to beat back this costly initiative.
